Cambridge rushing attack too much in win over Decatur Community

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- In a meeting of contrasting styles, ground and pound won.

Using a steady rushing attack, Cambridge defeated Decatur Community, Kan., 62-32 Friday night in Cambridge. The Trojans had 63 rushing attempts for 420 yards and eight touchdowns in the victory.

Decatur Community (0-1) made Cambridge (1-1) work for all four quarters, thanks to a quick-strike offense. The Red Devils had 231 yards passing on just eight completions to keep the visitors in the game.

Cambridge took an early 14-0 advantage on touchdown runs from Caden Houghtelling and Taten Benson before Decatur Community responded with scores from Kel Grafel and Isaiah Mason. Mason's 71-yard touchdown reception evened things at 14-14 with 8:52 left in the second quarter.

After trading scores, Preston Carbaugh found Houghtelling for a 14-yard touchdown with just 0:06 left in the first half to give Cambridge a 26-20 advantage heading into intermission.

Benson found paydirt early in the second half to give the Trojans a 34-20 lead before Kole Breth ran in a 48-yard touchdown to pull the Red Devils back to within 34-26.

The two traded scores again before Cambridge pulled away with the game's final 22 points.

Leading the way for Cambridge was Benson's 271 rushing yards and three scores on 38 carries. Houghtelling chipped in four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) and 130 yards of total offense. Paxton Ross and Spencer Rice also had touchdowns for the Trojans.

Mason was Decatur Community's top threat with 118 yards and two touchdowns on just two receptions. Quarterback Dawson Kempt had 220 yards passing, while Breth led the ground game with 49 yards and two scores.

Decatur Community travels to Dighton, Kan., Friday, while Cambridge has a bye week.
