Eagles, Trojan golfing tough in Class C state
KEARNEY, Neb. -- Three Gazette-area golfers sit in the top 30 of the Class C field after Tuesday’s opening round at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course.
Preston Carbaugh of Cambridge is tied for 21st with an 82, while Southern Valley’s Trent Krejdl and Ryder Lewis both fired an 83 to tie for 26th place.
Other Gazette golfers competing in the Class C field are Southern Valley’s Spencer Brown (score of 94, tied for 62nd place), Riley Mustin (94, 62nd), Chaston Burgeson (103, 85th).
Carbaugh, Cambridge’s lone representative, started his day with a 44 on the front nine, but rebounded with a strong 38 on the back half. The sophomore did not record a birdie, but did no worse than his back-to-back double-bogeys on the third and fourth holes.
Meanwhile, the Southern Valley duo of Krejdl and Lewis sit one stroke back with an 83. Krejdl fired Southern Valley’s lone birdie, doing so on the par-five sixth hole.
The current leader is Hastings St. Cecilia’s Jack Thompson, who shot a 75. Perkins County’s Joshua Johnston is one stroke back with a 76, while Lincoln Christian’s Ryan Van Ostrand and Lincoln Lutheran’s Elijah Frost are tied for third with 77 each.
As a team, Southern Valley is in eighth place with a score of 354. Lincoln Lutheran sits in first with a 321, while Kimball is second with 324 and Lincoln Christian is third with 325.
Today’s (Wednesday) final round will see Carbaugh and Lewis in the same foursome, which tees off at 10:20 a.m. Mustin and Krejdl both have 10:10 a.m. start times, while Brown begins at 10:00 a.m. Burgeson (11:00 a.m.) will be the final Gazette golfer to start.
