Columnist publishes new book
McCOOK, Neb. — Long-time McCook Gazette columnist, Walt Sehnert, whose “From Days Gone By” is published each Monday, has written another book, this one about his experiences in Korea during the Korean War. A life-long baker, he used those skills during his Army service.
“In a way, although we did not realize it at the time, members of my group were pioneers in a huge change that took place in the U.S. Armed Services, in that we 12 were the first white soldiers to integrate the 130th Quartermaster Co., which up until that time had been an all-black unit. “I did take a certain satisfaction in the fact that we did our part in making the Army’s bold experiment (at that time) a success,” he wrote in the book’s forward.
He noted that some of the terms and language may be offensive, but they accurately reflect the 1950 Army. “If I have offended some by using some of these words in these stories, all I can say is that it was a part of our life in 1950 and I apologize.”
