Bison grapplers best Haymakers in dual
McCOOK, Neb. -- Christmas may still be over two weeks away, but the McCook Bison wrestling team is already in the holiday spirit.
The Bison put on a strong team performance for Thursday's home crowd, leading to a 51-24 victory over Cozad.
Head coach Nick Umscheid had another word to describe Thursday's performance.
"Dominating."
"(Tonight's) win was a very dominating performance," he said. "Cozad was able to fill 13 weight classes and we were able to fill only 11, so we knew that we were going to need to pick up some key bonus points in some of our matches. We were able to do that."
McCook wasted little time asserting its strength on the mats. The first three matches of the night resulted in Bison pins, giving the hosts six points from each contest.
"The team was able to build some early momentum in the first three matches," Umscheid commented. "That momentum was able to carry us through the rest of the dual."
In all, McCook recorded 10 victories, with only one coming by way of an open-weight forfeit. Six Bison wrestlers won their contest by pin.
Winners by fall were Trevor Felber (113 lbs. class), Landon Towne (145 lbs.), Eric Langan (182 lbs.), Jaret Matson (195 lbs.), Kaleb Taylor (220 lbs.) and Colin Giron (285 lbs.).
The highlight match of the night was a rematch from last weekend's championship match at 160 lbs., as Dunncan Rogers took on Cameron Griffis. That contest went the distance before Rogers emerged victorious.
The other Bison to win by decision were Kody Hahn (170 lbs.) and Carson Richards (106 lbs.).
Mason Bales at 132 lbs. was the only Bison to win from an open weight.
Cozad's winners were Dekan Allen (120 lbs., open weight), Jace Russman (126 lbs. over Coady Armstrong), Kanyon Eckard (138 lbs., open weight) and Nathan Smock (152 lbs., open weight).
With only two home regular season contests -- Thursday's dual and an invitational on Jan. 27 -- Umscheid was pleased to see the strong community turnout at Thursday's dual.
"The home crowd was also amazing. Their support really gave us the edge in some of the key matches throughout the night."
The Bison return to action this weekend, as McCook travels to Holdrege for a Saturday invitational.
