McCook tennis defeats Lexington 6-3

McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook Bison tennis team turned home cooking into victory stew with a 6-3 win over Lexington Tuesday evening at the Bison Tennis Courts.

Depth proved to be the difference against the Minutemen. McCook split its six singles matches, but won all three doubles matches to record the 6-3 win.

"We had a tough, frustrating outing at Kearney yesterday, so it was good to see us bounce back with this result," said McCook head coach Matt Wiemers.

In singles action, the Bison split their six matches with Lexington. Spencer Krysl lost his No. 1 Singles match 8-3, Sam Knoll was defeated in a tough 9-7 decision at No. 2 Singles and Josiah Hegwood suffered a 9-7 setback at No. 4 Singles. Winners were Syd Wier at No. 3 Singles (8-4), Zion Moyer at No. 5 Singles (8-5) and Von Fritsche with an 8-0 sweep at No. 6 Singles.

In varsity doubles, Hegwood/Fritsche won 8-4 at No. 1 Doubles, while Moyer/Bortner also recorded an 8-4 victory at No. 2 Doubles. No. 3 Doubles saw Krysl/Knoll cruise to an 8-1 decision.

The junior varsity team had most of its success in singles play. Teagan Sitzman (6-1), Kenny Farr (6-2), Joel Gray (6-3) and Matthew Searcey (6-4) all won their matches, while Andrew Graff suffered the lone loss with a 6-4 setback. Ryan Brown/Nick Wolvin recorded the lone doubles win for the McCook JV with their 6-1 performance. Other JV duos were Tanner Unger/Logan Barenberg (lost 6-4), Zach Burkey/Kade Gray (lost 6-3), Brandan Eckhardt/Isaiah Petty (lost 6-3) and Colten Craig/Joey Gonzales (lost 6-2).

The Bison and Minutemen square off again this Friday in a duel at Lexington.
