A question for Sasse
Tuesday, August 16, 2016
To review a bit. Retired Senator Ben Nelson had a distinguished political career in Nebraska. In college young Ben worked for then governor Frank Morrison. Then on to a successful career in the insurance business. Eventually Ben ran for the Nebraska Legislature and was elected from a majority Republican district even though he was an unshakable Democrat. Next step Ben ran for and was elected Governor of the State of Nebraska. A Democrat in strong Republican territory. Popular he ran again and was reelected.
Having a popular record as Governor Ben then ran for the US Senate and was elected. For Nebraska he was a good fit able to negotiate both sides of the aisle in the Senate. Then came the vote for socialized medicine, Obamacare. Ben was the last man standing and his NO vote could have tanked President Obama's favored socialist program. But he caved, gave a lame excuse, voted YES and Obamacare was foisted on the country.
Nebraska wasn't happy. Ben received a chilly reception when he came back home to Lincoln. His team put feelers out to see if his reelection to the Senate would be possible and evidently they received a resounding consensus of "not possible to reelect"!
Next thing we the Nebraska voters learned was that Ex-Senator Ben has been selected CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) conveniently officed in Washington D.C. The salary a tad less than a $1.0 million a year. Health insurance Obamacare just a coincidence right?
Never has it been openly admitted that the fix was in. Senator Ben already had a more than comfortable retirement stipend earned as a US Senator but gee $1.0 million a year for doing little would be tough to pass up. Vote your conscience.
Now we have U.S. Senator Ben Sasse and a contentious election for president in the making. Ben pleas that he is no politician and as a new-comer is still learning to ask the "right" questions. His Senate voting record so far has earned him ranking as the 3rd most conservative senator. A good thing.
Sen. Ben Sasse has recently stated that he is uncomfortable with the Republican nominee for president Donald Trump. Understandable but separating Senator Sasse from the rest of us decidedly Republican voters the Honorable Senator has publicly announced that he will not endorse Donald Trump for President nor will he vote for him.
To me that means that Senator Sasse, Republican from Nebraska, would be more comfortable with a Hillary Presidency than one headed by the bombastic Donald Trump. Humm.
Then at Monday evening town hall meeting at the McCook Elementary, Grannie Annie boldly stepped forward and asked Sen. Sasse point blank if he had been promised a position of Washington power if he helped enable a win for Hillary. Go Grannie! To his credit the Senator's response was civil and he explained in detail how his conscience stemming from his oath of office would not allow him to vote for a presidential candidate whose word one could not rely on. He also cited examples of how Trump gave differing lists of names of whom he might nominate for Supreme Court judges depending on the groups of people he was talking to. Hillary's record of truthfulness we are all aware.
'Tis a shame that politics and politicians have earned such a distaste in the minds of we the people who vote. Honest and above-board would be such a better way to conduct the business of the nation but what we have smells of corruption. I guess Alexis de Tocqueville had it about right when he stated "In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve." Vote wisely.
That is how I saw it.
