McCOOK, Neb. --Listen up, sports fans! There's a new guy in town.

His name is R.B. Headley and he's the McCook Gazette's new sports editor.

Going forward, sports fans in the Golden Plains are going to have a lot of fun trying to figure out what the R.B. stands for.

"Through the years, my initials have stood for a lot of things," R.B. says, "including Rarely Brilliant, Round Belly, Rumblin' Bumblin' and Really Bald."

The real truth? Well, we're going to keep that secret for awhile, letting Gazette sports fans decide what the best description for R.B. would be.

This Headley fellow, who started his duties with the Gazette Monday, has followed a long and winding path since graduating from Kearney High School in 1985 and the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1990.

"I was attracted to the journalism business because, as a kid, I always liked following sports and keeping lists," R.B. said. As a result, he majored in journalism and minored in broadcasting at UN-K.

In the years which followed, R.B. has worked for newspapers throughout Nebraska , Kansas, Wyoming and Colorado, including stints at the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, the Alliance Times-Herald, the Holdrege Daily Citizen, the Blair Enterprise, the Fort Morgan (Colo.) Times and the Colby (Kan.) Free Press.

Looking back on his 20-plus-year newspaper career, R.B. said one of the most special moments was when a rodeo picture he took appeared in the New York Times. He's covered state tournaments in virtually every high school sport.

"It's a real honor to be in McCook," R.B. said.

At work and at play, sports is a big part of R.B.'s life, as he follows the exploits of his favorite college and pro teams, including the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Minnesota Vikings.

You can always e-mail R.B. -- at sports@mccookgazette.com -- or leave a message on his telephone extension by dialing 308-345-4500, x-115. His first major project will be getting the Fall Sports Section ready for area fans.
