CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Betty Jean Ficken, age 89, of Cambridge, passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on June 27, 2016.
Betty and her twin sister, Bonnie, were born south of Holbrook, Neb., on the family farm on Feb. 20, 1927, to Albert Turner and Addie Eliza (Lankston) Robeson.
Betty attended country school, later graduating from Holbrook High School in 1944. She continued her education going to Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney, Neb. Upon completion of her two years in Kearney, Betty received her Certificate of Normal Training. She taught in rural Furnas County and also at Orafino Schools. On Aug. 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Raymond Ficken at the Salem Lutheran Church near Elwood. Raymond preceded her in death in Aug. 29, 2010.
She worked for Twin Valley Rural Electric for several years. Betty was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge and was active in the LWML of the church. Betty was a member of the Burton's Bend Auxiliary, Sunshine Club. Her hobbies included sewing, handiwork, cooking, gardening, reading and playing "pitch."
Upon retirement, Betty and Raymond moved to Cambridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; brother, Fay Robeson; sister, Wilma and husband, Robert Mishler; brothers-in-law, Robert Siebecker, Herman Ficken and Arthur Ficken; sisters-in-law, Alvena and husband, William Wickenkamp and Corrine Ficken.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Jeanine and husband, Perry Quigley of Indianola, Neb. and Rhonda and husband, Lynn Randolph of McCook, Neb.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pat Robeson of Fremont, Neb., and Edna Ficken of McCook; brother-in-law, Harvey Ficken of Eustis, Neb.; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 1, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge with Pastor Brett Hinrich officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery of Cambridge.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 30, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friends may leave on-line condolences at lockenour.com. Memorial may be left in Betty's name to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
