TULSA, Okla. -- Gordon "Buzz" Matson was born May 24, 1944, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Gordon and Audell Matson. He passed away May 6, 2016, in Tulsa, Okla.
Buzz attended school in Iowa, Wyoming and Minnesota, graduating from Harmony High School in Minnesota. He married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Broadwater, and to this union two sons were born.
He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and his education specialist degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Buzz taught and coached at Decatur Community High School in Oberlin, Kansas, where he later became principal.
After retiring from education, he raised cattle on a small farm near Oberlin.
Buzz is survived by his wife, Cynthia; two sons, Buck (Nelda) Matson of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Andy (Sandy) Matson of White Hall, Ark.; two step-grandsons; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
He was a member of the Oberlin United Methodist Church, Kansas Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and numerous other local organizations.
