McCOOK, Neb. -- Douglas James West of rural McCook passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Community Hospital. Doug fought a long and courageous battle with kidney failure and dialysis issues. He was 44 years old.
Doug was born on Sept. 15, 1971, in Cambridge, Neb., to parents, Donald Arthur and Yvonne (Ruppert) West, Sr. He graduated from Republican Valley High School in 1989. While in high school, Doug played basketball and later played men's and co-ed softball.
After graduation, Doug became an integral part of the family business, Performance Athletics. He would devote the next 29 years to Southwest Nebraska, offering all kinds of sports related clothes and equipment. It was a job he took seriously, often putting his business of helping others before his own health.
Doug's devotion to sports overflowed into his hobbies of guns, hunting and cheering for his beloved Huskers. Through the years, players like Tony Dorsett and Michael Jordan brought much joy to his life.
Doug also had a love of cars, especially his 1968 Camaro.
Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Henry and Julia Ruppert; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Hannah West; uncle, Wilbur West; and aunt, Eileen West.
Survivors include his parents, Donald and Yvonne West, Sr. of McCook; a brother, Donald West, Jr. and wife, Heather, a niece, Grace West and nephew, Donald West, III, all of Weatherford, Texas; numerous family and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Visitation will be Monday, April 11, 2016, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh.com to extend condolences.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 12, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Bales officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
