McCOOK, Neb. -- Carlton Walter "Walt" McGuire of McCook passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 77 years old.
Walt was born on Oct. 12, 1938, at McCook, the only child of parents Carl Joseph and Berniece Myrtle (Johnson) McGuire. He graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1957, where he was known as the "Toe," a nickname given to him after kicking a field goal to win a close game with rival Hastings High School. He continued his education at Kearney State Teacher's College.
He was united in marriage to Elaine Schnoor in South Dakota. To this union three children were born, Rick, Carlton, and Kim.
On Feb. 14, 1987, he married Brenda Louise (Eskue) George in McCook. With this union three more sons were added to Walt's family, Jim, Warren and Mike. Walt made a life-time commitment in the retail business. He was owner/operator of the Ben Franklin Store both in Holdrege and Imperial. While he was living in Imperial, he also was owner of Walt's Liquor and Sporting Goods Store. Walt and Brenda worked side by side with McGuire Consulting that would take their business all over the world.
Walt was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was active in helping with the Heritage Day Lunch. He was also a member of the McCook Mason's and Order of Eastern Star, where he held several offices.
Walt found peace and solace at his ranch north of Stratton where he spent many hours working and just simply enjoying nature. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining, whether it was for a small or large crowd.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Carl and Berniece McGuire.
Survivors include his loving wife, Brenda McGuire of McCook; daughter, Kim Ray McGuire of Lincoln; sons, Rick McGuire and wife, Linda, of Warrenton, Mo., Carlton McGuire and wife, Denise, of Merry Esther, Fla., Jim Patman and wife, DeAnne, Warren Patman and wife, Donna, all of Odessa, Texas, and Mike Patman and wife, Tracie, of Bethany, Ore.; nine grandchildren, Rick McGuire, Andra McGuire, Tiffany McGuire, Matthew McGuire, J.R. Patman, Shaun Patman, Derick Patman, Nate Patman, and Jake Patman; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, 2 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Doug Griger and Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. A Masonic and Eastern Star Service will be at the church. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
