The Grinch who stole the almond bark
Wednesday, December 23, 2015
Local holiday bakers have been receiving a big lump of coal in their stockings for the past week, as the entire community seems to be suffering from an almond bark shortage.
The candy coating that comes in several flavors is in high demand, as it is a quick and easy sweet addition to pretzels, popcorn, cookies, and candies. This simple item usually gets bottom shelf real estate at groceries, but during the holiday season, it is in center aisle stacked several feet tall.
But alas, not so in McCook for the past several days. A quick trip down the baking aisle, and shoppers observe a cavernous hole where the almond bark usually resides. One grocer told us that it is on backorder at the warehouse, and thought it may be in by Christmas Eve, but he was reluctant to make any promises. Our theory is that somewhere, in some dark basement storage cupboard, a conniving Grinch is hoarding many blocks of the sweet treat, which will allow him or her to be the Holiday Hero.
When the Great Almond Bark Crisis of 2015 subsides, we recommend bakers plan ahead for Valentines Day so as not to experience the same disappointment the next time demand is high.
