Policy would ease athletic scholarship rules
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- The Mid-Plains Community College board of governors approved on first reading an amended Athletic Grants-In-Aid policy which eliminates a requirement that at least one-third of student athletes on each MPCC-approved team be Nebraska residents.
Meeting in North Platte Wednesday, the board also approved the purchase of two 2015 program minivans and a one-ton dually truck from Janssen Chrysler Jeep Dodge of North Platte for a total of $70,533. Bids were solicited from 26 auto dealers within MPCC's 18-county area, and Janssen submitted the lowest bids.
The minivans will be used as road vehicles and the truck for hauling the project car to various car shows and other recruiting events. The college will trade in two 2008 Chevy Uplander minivans and a 1997 Chevy 3500 dually pickup.
Board members also met Nestle, MPCC's therapy dog and Nestle's handler, Holly Andrews, and Jamie Peters, Crystal Welch, Holly Andrews and Paul Knopick, representatives of the colleges Working on the Wellness program. The program was one of 43 organizations from 28 Nebraska communities to earn a Governor's Wellness Award in September. The board also conducted a closed session for 11⁄2 hours on negotiations.
