OBERLIN, Kan. -- Maritta Louise VanPelt was born May 31, 1944, in Norton, Kansas, the daughter of Glen LeRoy and Leanor Dee (Conard) Foight. She passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, at the age of 71.
Maritta was reared at a country home near McCook, Nebraska. She graduated from McCook High School and then completed the nurse aide program at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas.
Maritta married Keith VanPelt on April 7, 1973. Together they raised three children and were also blessed with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Over the years, the family made their home in McCook and Indianola, Nebraska, and Oberlin, Kansas. Maritta worked as a nurse aide and owned Grooming by Maritta. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with family and attending her grandkids' activities. Maritta was also an avid gardener.
She is survived by her husband, Keith, of Oberlin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Curt and Shannon VanPelt, of Indianola, Nebraska, and Jason and Kimberly VanPelt of McCook, Nebraska; one daughter and son-in-law, Leah and Steve Sewell of Dresden; two brothers and their wives, Glen and Deb Foight of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Ronald and Pam Foight of Beaver City, Nebraska; one brother-in-law and his wife, Charles and Jannelle VanPelt, of Indianola, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Dona VanPelt of Hays; nine grandchildren: Dan Sewell, Thomas Sewell, Alexis Ruetti, Kayla DelaVega, Kyle VanPelt, Kaden VanPelt, Gina Westerman, Spencer VanPelt and Ariana VanPelt; two great-grandchildren: Victor DelaVega and Trinity Sewell; in addition to nephews and nieces, other family members and friends.
Maritta was preceded in death by her first husband, Stan Haase; parents, Glen and Leanor; two infant sisters, LaDonna Faye Foight and GeorgeAnn Foight; and brother-in-law, LeRoy VanPelt.
Funeral services were Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with Pastor Richard Karr officiating. Burial was in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given in Maritta's memory to the Good Samaritan Society-Decatur County or McCook Humane Society and sent to the funeral home at 121 N. Penn Ave., Oberlin, KS 67749.
