McCOOK, Neb. -- A position at Red Willow Animal Clinic offers Dr. Mike Nussbaum the opportunity to focus on his speciality of treating large animals, primarily beef cattle.

The service area of the animal clinic located just west of McCook, Nebraska, also intrigued Dr. Nussbaum, reminding him of where he practiced in Montana.

Like that area, Southwest Nebraska producers have the large beef herds and cow/calf operations that Dr. Nussbaum appreciates. "In eastern Nebraska, I worked big feedlots, but missed the big cow/calf herds I enjoyed in Montana," he said.

Dr. Nussbaum attended veterinary school at Colorado State and then interned in food animal production medicine at the University of Idaho for 3 1/2 years. He was promoted to a resident and an assistant professor, where he taught senior veterinary medicine students and was involved in research.

He practiced in Montana for one year and in Nebraska for three years. In 1996, Dr. Nussbaum opened his own practice in Leigh, Nebraska, and sold out to a partner in 2013.

Earlier this summer, Dr. Nussbaum answered an advertisement placed by Dr. Wayne Watkins of Red Willow Animal Clinic seeking a vet for the large animal side of his practice at McCook. Upon visiting the clinic, Dr. Nussbaum became impressed with the staff and facility.

Dr. Nussbaum started July 20.

"It's a fantastic staff, and well-equipped facility," he said. "They have good equipment not only here at the clinic, but also mobile equipment for working on the farm. It's very impressive."

Although Dr. Nussbaum's specialty is large animals, he's also enjoying the small animal side of the clinic as he acclimates to his new surroundings.

Red Willow Animal Clinic is located 1 1/4 miles west of McCook on Highway 6 and 34. It is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, from 8 a.m. until noon.
