Patrick Solko of Herndon, Kansas, right, and his nephew, Jim Schroeder, also of Herndon, discuss the finer points of pit-roasting roast beef (not ox) for the once-every-five-years "Herndon Ox Roast," which thousands helped the tiny community of 129 celebrate Saturday and Sunday. Williams Bros. Supermarket of Atwood donated the 1,600 pounds of roast beef that would feed well over 2,000 diners who gathered in the park after the parade Saturday. Two lines leading up to the serving tables each stretched up to two blocks long. Among the many servers were Lina Mumm of Ludell, Kansas, and Roger Prideaux of Atwood, Kansas.
