Second-floor fire
Firefighters from Indianola, Red Willow Western and City of McCook gather up their equipment after extinguishing a blaze on the second story of an unoccupied home across the road east of the former RV school houses on Highway 6&34 between McCook and Indianola about noon Wednesday. Indianola fire chief Tom Davidson said that an investigation by a state fire marshal indicated that spontaneous combustion among cans of floor and woodwork refinishing chemicals caused the fire that then spread to the stairway. The fire was contained to the second floor, although the entire house sustained heat and smoke damage. There is no damage estimate available, Davidson said. He said he greatly appreciated assistance on the scene by McCook and RWW firefighters. The house is owned by Bethene and Steve Vontz of McCook.
