McCOOK, Neb. -- Graveside services for Kenneth S. Dow will be conducted from the Indianola Cemetery at Indianola, Nebraska, on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 10 a.m. with Pastor DeWane Dow officiating. A celebration of life service will be held immediately afterwards at the Community Building in Indianola.
Kenneth Scott Dow, 52 years of age, of McCook, Nebraska, passed away after a brief battle with brain cancer on Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. He was born Sept. 5, 1961, at McCook, the second of three sons born to Russ and Joy (Hedges) Dow and graduated from Republican Valley High School. He studied electronics and production at Colby Community College and MIT (Missouri Institute of Technology).
Early in life, he discovered his love of electronics and radio. While in high school, he built Indianola's first and only radio station in the basement of his parents' house. Complete with weather updates, guest DJ's, and call-in requests, Dr. Dow's radio station was a favorite place for his friends to hang out. He had a DJ business for many years playing music for dances and wedding receptions. He loved being a part of the Indianola community and helping with the Fourth of July and Old Settlers annual celebrations.
Dr. Dow (as he was known to his friends) was an accomplished photographer, who had a great eye for telling stories through his pictures. If he could chase tornadoes and get a perfect picture in the process, it was a good day for him. The fun side of Dr. Dow loved trips to Disneyland, all things related to Jerry Lewis, and his prized motorcycle.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his two brothers, Don Dow and his wife, Donna of Coweta, Oklahoma, and DeWane Dow and his wife, Anita of Holdrege, Nebraska; niece, Jamie Nethery and her husband, Tom of Port Charlotte, Florida; nephews, Kelly Valladao and his wife, Donna Kay of Coweta, Evan Dow of Holdrege and Aaron Dow of Holdrege; great-nieces and nephews, Keldon Valladao, Casey Valladao, Ryan Porter and his wife, Chrissy, Hailey Russell and her husband, Chase, Brian Nethery and his wife, Angela, Deborah Goeser and her husband Patrick, Daniel Nethery and his wife, Elisabeth, Joshua Nethery, and Sarah Cornell and her husband, Vernell; and a host of other family and friends.
Dr. Dow will be remembered for his beautiful smile, unending kindness, and great sense of humor. As he would say, "From KEND (later changed to KDOW, later changed to KDJR) on Signal Hill in Indianola -- thanks for listening and good night."
There will be no visitation as the family has chosen cremation.
A memorial has been established in Kenneth's honor and will be designated at a later date to a project that will benefit his hometown.
