New car theft charges filed against man on probation for same charge
McCOOK, Nebraska -- A man who stole a Bristol Windows company vehicle from the Chief Motel last summer and received probation in November, was back in court this week facing a felony charge stemming from the recent theft of another vehicle.
The offender, 19-year-old Jesse J. Maret of Wilsonville, Neb., accepted a plea agreement Monday reducing a Class III felony offense of theft by receiving stolen property to a Class IV felony version. Maret was subsequently scheduled for sentencing at 1:30 p.m. on July 7, 2014, in Red Willow County District Court.
Maret received a 30 month probation sentence in November for the theft of the Bristol Windows vehicle. His most recent charge stems from the theft of a 1997 Nissan Sentra belonging to Dan McElhaney.
Maret was pulled over in the stolen vehicle on April 4, 2014, less than six months into his probation sentence in the previous case.
After attempting to deceive the arresting officer pertaining to his identity he claimed he had been given the stolen vehicle by someone else. Maret was unable to get his story straight pertaining to the incident and gave arresting officers a false name of the other individual he said was involved.
Red Willow County Attorney Paul Wood pursued a lone charge of theft by receiving stolen property, before offering Maret the plea agreement reducing the charge from a Class III felony to a Class IV felony.
Maret admitted to probation violations stemming from the incident and will be sentenced on those at the same time as the theft offense for receiving stolen property. The violations also indicated he failed to report for probation three days prior to his arrest and also failed to complete outpatient treatment as ordered.
