McCOOK, Nebraska -- McCook Community College's 'Parents Night Out' fundraiser is Saturday.

The McCook Community College Women's Basketball team is offering babysitting services Saturday while parents enjoy a night out. It's part of the Lady Indians' fund raiser.

While parents enjoy a night to themselves, their boys and girls, ages 4-12 are invited to hang out with the MCC players at the MCC Events Center from 5-11 p.m. The night will include pizza, movies, basketball, board games and more.

A minimum $10 donation per child would be appreciated.

MCC Instructor to speak at NHS Induction in Curtis

McCook Community College instructor Mike Hendricks will deliver the speech to inductees of the National Honor Society today at Medicine Valley High School.

Hendricks has been a Sociology and Criminal Justice Instructor at MCC for 20 years and at other colleges and universities for a total of 34 years. He has written about love, relationships and life in his opinion column that has appeared in the McCook Gazette for the past 17 years. He authored the book "Thoughts About Love: You Take My Breath Away," published in 2007 by Morris Media.

He is a former Social Science Division Chair for the Mid Plains Community College. He is a five time selection as Who's Who Among America's Teachers. In 2003, he was appointed by Governor Mike Johanns to the Judicial Nominating Commission, District and County Court. On campus he has sponsored the MCC chapters of Phi Theta Kappa, Student Senate, and the Criminal Justice Club.

'Caring For Children Conference' set Saturday at MCC

The annual Caring for Children Conference will be held on Saturday, March 22. The conference, which is sponsored by the High Plains Early Learning Connections Partnership, is set for McCook Community College from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

This conference is for all childcare providers and early childhood educators, parents and foster parents. This fun filled day will offer a variety of "Caring for Children" workshops to support those who have or who work with young children.

Cost for the conference is $50 and will be held at the Weeth Theatre on the MCC campus.

The keynote speaker will be national educational consultant Dan St. Romain. He provides interactive, entertaining sessions that offer participants rich insight into the connectedness between educational practices and children's behavior.

Conference breakout sessions will feature information on early literacy, emergency preparedness, relationships, infant sign language, sensory overload, nutrition, and brain injuries in young children.

Other conference presenters include Darlene Bantam of Family Service Childcare Food Program, Heather Gill and Phyllis Graney from ESU 16, Heidi Wheeler and Helena Janousek of Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department, sign language tutor Kimmie Stapp, Jamie Garner of ESU 15, and elementary/early childhood educator Michelle Kimberly-Rhoades.

The Caring for Children Conference is for anyone who is interested in children. Many child care providers, preschool teachers, Head Start staff, and foster parents use the conference to obtain their required continuing education hours. The conference will also be helpful to parents, elementary teachers, college students, and others who work with young children.

The conference is sponsored by these members of the High Plains Early Learning Connections Partnership: Family Resource Center, McCook Community College, McCook Public Schools, ESU 16, ESU 15, Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska Head Start, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Family Services Childcare Food Program, University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension, Southwest Nebraska Health Department, Nebraska Respite Network, and Panhandle Adult and Child Care Food Program. The conference is sponsored by a grant from federal and state funds administered by the Nebraska Department of Education.
