Original mass media takes center stage for Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival

How much time do you spend with the media?

Television, radio, movies, streaming video -- yes, books and newspapers -- offer more opportunities to be informed, educated and entertained than ever before in history.

But no matter how it is delivered, in digital packets, radio waves, fiber optics or printing press, the story remains the most vital component of the whole process.

Predating all other media, the human voice remains the most effective means for transmitting ideas from one person to another.

The Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival is ready to prove that point again, "Deep Roots, Broad Horizons" the theme of the 18th annual festival, set for McCook June 13-14.

A National Storytelling Network Circle of Excellence Oracle Award winner, headliner Beth Horner has been sought after as a storytelling performance and teaching artist since 1983. She has performed multiple times at the National Storytelling Festival, on Live From National Geographic, at Miami's International Art of Storytelling Festival, and most recently served as narrative consultant for NASA/Johnson Space Center's Story Mining project for which she collected the stories of the scientists behind the Apollo Space Missions.

Public radio listeners will recognize The Steel Wheels, based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, blending old-time musical traditions with innovative sound and lifestyles for a modern revival.

Performing poets Matt Mason and Sara McKinstry-Brown are well known for making poetry enlightening and entertaining through programs and poetry slams across the nation.

Archeologist and author Dr. Peter Bleed will provide a true tie to Buffalo Commons by taking visitors on a tour of the infamous Royal Buffalo Hunt when the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia enjoyed a western adventure with the help of Gen. Philip Sheridan, George Armstrong Custer, Buffalo Bill Cody and Spotted Taile of the Brule Sioux.

  • How positively true! Through all the development of mass media, the spoken word--the story--is the original and still most innovative form of communicating, preserving heritage, conveying values, and just plain having fun.

    One of the most unique aspect of the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival is that we realize stories are told through music and poetry as well as narrative. This combination of exciting stories in all their forms makes this festival fantastic entertainment for all ages.
