(CULBERTSON, Nebraska -- Friends of a 7-year-old boy from Culbertson, Nebraska, plan a fundraiser carnival to help his family cope with the expenses of the boy's cancer treatments and travel to and from Children's Hospital in Omaha.

(Note: Corrects day of week and spelling of first name:)

Darin Neben, a second grader at Hitchcock County Schools, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer and is undergoing surgery and treatment in Omaha. He is the son of Kristina and Tyler Neben of Culbertson, and the grandson of Jimmy and Deb Hayes of Imperial, Kenny and Cindy Neben of Dunning and Rod and Pam Schaeffer of Stapleton. Darin has three brothers.

The carnival, bake sale, soup supper and silent auction will be Sunday, Feb. 16, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m., in the Community Building on the Hitchcock County fairgrounds in Culbertson. "Team Darin" bracelets for youths and adults -- in Darin's favorite color, purple -- will be available for $3 each.

Kandie McCauley of McCook, one of several organizers, said she is amazed by the outpouring of offers to help with the event. "Help with the baking, the carnival, with soups and pies, with sandwiches," Kandie said. "And offers to donate craft items."

Kandie said they're still looking for more volunteer help for the carnival; contact her at (308) 340-8296; or Kristi Manley, (308) 340-3313; or Alissa Erickson, (308) 340-7157.

The fraternal benefit society Modern Woodmen of America will match up to $2,500 in donations, while the local Modern Woodmen chapter will gift $2,500 to Daren and his family.

Donations to the Neben family can be taken to any branch of Great Western Bank, and deposited in the "Kristina Neben Donation Account."

Cards can be mailed to Daren at Children's Hospital, Room 618, 8200 Dodge, Omaha, NE 68114;

or sent by e-mail to: childrensomaha.org/patientgreetingcards

When he is released, his address will be: Tim Wilson 334 8th St. Syracuse Ne 68446
