'Trail of Treasures' flea market to reach McCook

FAIRBURY, Nebraska -- Tourism promoters along Nebraska's Heritage Highway 136 in southeastern Nebraska are planning a byway-long flea market event, scheduled for Oct. 4-6. Several "corridor" communities along Highways 8 and 14 will be participating and this year for the first time, Highways 6-34 from Arapahoe to McCook will also be participating in the event. "We've had a great response from communities out west and now have vendors from Arburn in the east all the way to McCook, a stretch of more than 276 miles," according to coordinator Julie Katz of Fairbury.

In its second year, the event called the "Trail of Treasures" will bring thousands of visitors to communities along southeastern, south-central and now Southwest Nebraska highways and byways in search of bargains. "We have seen the positive impact that events like this have had in other regions of the state, such as the Junk Jaunt and we hope to bring visitors and economic opportunities to communities in the entire region," according to Jay Hall, president of the Heritage Highway Association.

Members of the Heritage Highway 136 Association representing communities, attractions, community development and economic development organizations volunteer their time to promote tourism marketing initiatives and events along the byway.
