Letter to the Editor

Being evicted

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Dear Editor,

The residents of West "Q" Street Village became aware of being evicted by rumors. A quick check proved this to be true ... this occurred several weeks ago.

On May 15, 2013, Lundberg Realty hand-delivered a note stating that the property had been sold to NorthPointe Properties with Terry McCorkle and Bill Davis as owners.

On May 24, 2013, we finally received a first-class letter from Melanie Goodenberger, Golden Plains Realty advising us we had to vacate by Dec. 1, 2013. To add insult to injury, the lot rent was raised to $200 a month effective June 1, 2013.

This is not legal as Statue 76-1490 states in the Nebraska Landlord and Tenants rights for Mobile Home Parks tenants must receive at least 60 days notice.

All of these hush-hush activities has affected every ones' health. Stress, anxiety, anger several people have increased high blood pressure and I don't know what else. In addition, it will cause financial hardship because we don't have thousands of dollars for relocation.

One bright spot is the owners of Lazy L Mobile Home Park have offered to pay $1,500 toward the cost of moving. These fine people are kind and caring and show compassion. Remember, this is not their problem.

North Pointe Properties have offered us nothing because they don't care.

It is heart breaking to see the ladies crying and children crying, it they are old enough to understand what is happening.

We were advised to contact Rex Nelson, (MEDC ) to see if we qualify for relocation expenses. Free money, right? There is no such thing, it's taxpayer money, and probably has strings attached.

The stressed and displaced residents of the former West Q St. Village.

  • First of all, I feel for you people. You haven't gotten a fair shake but the fact is your homes are resting on rented lots. Were there any promises from the landowner that you would never have to move? You should have some help with your expenses to relocate. But now you want to chastise MEDC for at least trying to do something for you. Would you turn them or the City down if they offered to pay it all with so called tax money? They were trying to help you out in a bad situation and that's not good enough for you. You don't really think Lazy L is not doing this for business reasons do you? You can't fault them that's just good sound business practices. They will get their money back and they know you will be in the same situation you are right now. You can't afford to move. That's a lot of rent for quite a long time. There isn't a person in McCook that doesn't feel for you, but this is a private not public land deal between you and the developers. Have a fundraiser to hire a good attorney to help you. You might be surprised at how much people really do care and want to help! The developers were probably hoping and wishing you would go quietly. You have proved them wrong! But throwing stones at the wrong people will more than likely get you nowhere! Good Luck

  • People that are poor are not looked upon favorably. About 2,000 years ago, a person named Jesus loved the poor. So too it was that he loved the weak, the sick, the abandoned, etc.. He thought everyone should adopt his view of these people. But, his ideas were not popular at that time. And, they are not popular now.

  • These are mobile homes, key word, mobile. Surely they can be moved with minimal disassembly. Isn't there anyone with a tractor or semi-tractor that can help?

Or are there laws that prevent this?
