Cambridge boys, Bertrand girls claim RPAC track titles

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska -- One of the toughest track and field meets in Nebraska's Class C and D ranks was held last Friday at the Arapahoe High School facility.
When the dust settled, the Cambridge boys and Bertrand girls won team titles in the annual Republican Plains Activities Conference (RPAC) meet.
Cambridge won the boys team championship with a total of 133 points, 20 points ahead of runner-up Bertrand. Dundy County-Stratton was third with 78 points, as the Tigers nipped Alma by a single point. Paxton was fifth with 75 points.

Bertrand outran Southwest and Dundy County-Stratton in the girls division. Bertrand totaled 112.5 points, with Southwest second at 80.5, one point ahead of the DCS girls. Hitchcock County was fourth with 71.5 points, and Arapahoe fifth with 61.
The RPAC meet features 14 Class C and D schools spread across southwest Nebraska.
New meet records

Several new meet records were established during Friday's competition.
Mike Shoff of Cambridge continued his strong effort in the throwing events. Shoff hit the state's top mark in the shot put at 58 feet, 11 inches at the Mather Invitational in Arapahoe a week earlier. Shoff set a new RPAC record with his winning mark of 57-1 1/2 Friday. Shoff also won the boys discus with a throw of 147-7.
Tylan Petersen of Medicine Valley broke the RPAC record in the boys pole vault when he cleared 13 feet, 6 inches.
Cambridge sprinter Kaden Huxoll won three events. Huxoll was first in the 100-meter dash finals with his time of 11.2 seconds. Kaden also won the 200 at 23.0 and the 400 at 52.2. Teammate Gus Petersen was first in the 110-meter high hurdle finals with a time of 15.5 seconds.
Cambridge also won the boys 400 relay with the fastest time of the event, 45.4 seconds.
Girls division area winners
In the girls division, Kate Kelley established a new RPAC record when she cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to win the high jump. Kelley also claimed the gold medal in the 400-meter dash with her time of 1 minute, 1.7 seconds.
Laramey Lewis of Hitchcock County was a double winner. Lewis won the 100 in 12.8 seconds, nipping Cayla Polston of Arapahoe by a tenth of a second. Lewis also won the 200 in 26.5 seconds, with Kelley of Southwest second at 26.8.
Hitchcock County's Jacee Kershaw also claimed a gold medal in the 100 hurdles as she covered the 10 flights of hurdles in 16.1 seconds in the finals.
Gabby Mullanix of DCS established a meet record in the 3,200-meter run with her winning time of 12 minutes, 5.2 seconds. Mullanix trailed former RPAC record holder Kenzie Kaps of Bertrand for most of the eight-lap race, before Mullanix overtook Kaps on the final lap and won going away.
Nicole Hearon of DCS was first in the 300 hurdles at 49.5 seconds. Teammate Shayla Tucker hit a mark of 35 feet, 2 1/4 inches to finish first in the shot put.
Wauneta-Palisade had a pair of girls win RPAC gold medals. Shelby Hamilton was first in the discus at 106-1, and Abbie Fanning won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.4. Kattie Sadd of Southern Valley was first in the girls triple jump at 33-4.
The Arapahoe girls won the 400 relay and set a new RPAC record with a time of 52.0 seconds.
