City of McCook, Nebraska, firefighter Larry Davis, left, and firefighter/paramedic Dan Hartwell douse flames leaping from a fishing boat owned by Joel Smith of McCook. Fire Chief Marc Harpham said it's believed the fire was caused by gas fumes accumulated under a tarp and ignited by a spark from a nearby battery. A superheated aerosol can shot through the side of the boat, creating the round hole on the starboard side. Smith had moved the boat from his driveway to an adjacent vacant lot, at East 14th and D, just 10 minutes before the fire was discovered. Harpham estimated losses at $1,500.
