Area track & field district meet results

HERSHEY -- Dundy County-Stratton High School dominated the girls division at the Class C-10 District track and field meet Thursday, May 13, at Hershey.

The Tigers scored 124 points to win the district title. Hershey was a distant second with 79.5 points. Cambridge was fourth with 69.5 points, followed by Chase County with 62 points and Southwest with 52.

In the C-10 boys district, Sutherland topped Cambridge for the team title. Sutherland scored 104 points to 94 for the Trojans. Dundy County-Stratton's boys were third with 87 points, with Chase County sixth with 49.5 points and Southwest eighth with 20 points.

The top two finishers in each individual event qualified for the Class C state meet in Omaha May 21-22.

The DCS girls claimed five gold medals in the district competition. Cassandra Starks won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13 seconds flat. Teammate Nicole Hearon was second at 13.1. Starks also qualified for state in the 200-meter dash with her second-place time of 28.0 seconds.

Amanda Downey of DCS won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 1.9 seconds. Mariele Drobnitzky of DCS won the 800-meter run in 2:31.7, nipping Jilanne German of Chase County.

The Dundy County-Stratton girls also earned state meet berths by winning the 400-meter relay and the 3,200 relay.

Other area winners in the girls division included Kate Kelley of Southwest in the 200 (27.8 seconds), Frankie Petersen of Cambridge in the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch) and Jericca Lewis of Cambridge in the discus (108-11).

Kendal Glidden of Dundy County-Stratton highlighted the area performances in the boys C-10 District. Glidden won the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and he also placed first in the discus at 149-8.

The Cambridge duo of Hayden Ekberg and Brian Custer went 1-2 in the 1,600-meter run to punch a ticket to state. Ekberg's winning time was 4 minutes, 47.7 seconds. Custer finished in 4:50.2, as he ran down Kyle Bottom of Chase County down the home stretch for second place.

CLASS D-9 DISTRICT MEET RESULTS

BENKELMAN -- The Class D-9 District track and field meet was pushed back one day to Thursday, May 13, due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Bertrand swept the team titles in Thursday's district competition. The Bertrand boys scored 104 points, with Medicine Valley's boys second with 93 points. The Bertrand girls tallied 93 points, with Hitchcock County had 75 points to nip Eustis-Farnam for second in the girls team standings.

Brandon Arent of Maywood swept the gold medals in the boys hurdles. Arent was first in the 110-meter highs with a time of 15.2 seconds, and he also won the 300 intermediates in 40.8 seconds.

Other area winners in the boys division included Tyler Clifford of Hayes Center in the high jump, Derek Hildebrandt in the long jump, Clive Brown of Hitchcock County in the 100-meter dash, Ben Kugler of Eustis-Farnam in the 400, and Brady Rosno of Hayes Center in the 200.

Andrea Werth of Eustis-Farnam won two events in the girls division, with firsts in the 300 hurdles and 400-meter dash. Laramey Lewis of Hitchcock County also won gold medals in the 100 and 200.

CLASS C-9 DISTRICT MEET HIGHLIGHTS

ARAPAHOE -- Southern Valley's girls finished second in the Class C-9 District track and field meet Thursday, May 13, at Arapahoe High School.

The Eagles scored 77.5 points, with Shelton winning the meet with 135 points. Arapahoe was fourth in the girls division with 51 points.

In the C-9 boys division, Arapahoe was fourth with 72.6 points, and Southern Valley eighth with 16 points.

Jessica Murdock of Southern Valley qualified for state with her second-place throw of 117 feet, 9 inches in the girls discus. Sara Lennemann of Southern Valley also qualified with her second-place time of 1:02.6 in the girls 400-meter dash, and teammate Molly Glur qualified in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:27.6.

Pat Hoxmeier of Southern Valley won the boys long jump, and TJ Eichenberger of Arapahoe was first in the triple jump.
