McCook natives again key to Olympic coverage
VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Once again McCook natives Toby and Brett Warren are contributing their technical skills to broadcasting the Olympic Games.
The brothers are working onsite in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and New York City to broadcast the 21st Winter Olympic Games from Feb. 12 to 28. The Vancouver games are the fifth-straight games for Toby, who has worked the winter games as a broadcasting engineer beginning with Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002.
The Warren brothers also worked the Winter Games in Torino, Italy, in 2006 and the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004 and Beijing, China, in 2008.
For Brett, Vancouver is his fourth Olympics, because he has been involved as the head of monitor and control systems since Athens, Greece.
Toby won a broadcasting Emmy, "Outstanding Technical Team Studio," for the Athens games, and was nominated for Emmy awards for the Torino and Beijing games. Toby's responsibilities include designing communication routes for images of the games to reach viewers in the United States.
He engineers diverse routes for transmissions via satellite uplinks and fiber optics to ensure that images reach viewers. Toby has been working onsite in Vancouver since January and will stay there until March.
Brett designs and supervises a high-tech monitor and control computer system to guarantee complete accuracy of the transmissions. He worked onsite in Vancouver in January before going to New York City to manage the system.
Toby and Brett's parents, Ron and Gloria Warren of McCook, are traveling to Vancouver to see Toby and explore the Olympic host city. Toby said, "Vancouver is a beautiful metropolis at the foot of the Canadian Rockies and the edge of the Pacific Ocean." Weather is typically rainy in the winter months in town and the mountain village of Whistler should provide good snow for the ski and snowboarding events.
After the games, Brett will return to local business projects in McCook, and Toby will return to Denver, Colo., where he owns an engineering consulting business and lives with his wife. The summer games of 2012 in London, England will be the next destination for the talented pair.
