Resurfacing work scheduled for k-117 in Rawlins County
HERNDON, Kan. -- APAC Kansas, Inc. of Emporia, will begin a road construction project next Tuesday, July 21 on K-117 Highway north of Herndon, Kan., reports the Atwood Area Two Office of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).
A seal will be placed on K-117 from the US-36 Junction north to the Nebraska State Line -- approximately 12 miles in length. The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life. Workers will spread a thin layer of asphalt over the pavement then coat it with a layer of rock chips that is pressed into place with heavy rollers.
During daylight hours, traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone and guided by a pilot car operation. Travelers should plan on a short delay of 15 minutes or less due to the road work. KDOT urges motorists to be alert, watch for work zone warning signs and its workers while driving through a road construction zone.
"The seal operation should only take four to five days to complete, weather permitting," explains KDOT Area Two Engineer Eric Oelschlager.
The estimated cost of the seal is $291,781.
"As always, we ask that the public exercise caution while driving through this and any other work zone on our Kansas highways," reminds KDOT Public Affairs Manager Kristen Brands. "Please slow down, pay attention to the workers and signs within a construction zone."
