Nebraska defensive coordinator sees better progress

Saturday, March 28, 2009

LINCOLN -- Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini says he's impressed with the progress football players have made so far this year.

The Cornhuskers had a 2 1/2-hour workout on Friday, the second day of spring practice in preparation for the Red-White game on April 18.

Pelini said afterward that the players are progressing faster than they did last year and are working on more complicated plays.

Pelini also said he was excited to see competition among the younger linebackers. Redshirt freshmen Will Compton, Sean Fisher and Alonzo Whaley and sophomore Matt Holt are vying for playing time this spring.

Pelini said they are still making rookie mistakes, but they're bringing an intensity to practice that wasn't there last year.
