Viking girls rout Bison
For one quarter, the McCook Bison varsity girls basketball team had Grand Island Northwest's number.
The Bison rallied from an 18-10 deficit in the second quarter and took the lead 19-18 with a 9-0 run.
Then the Vikings scored the final 5 points of the first half, then outscored McCook 14-8 in the third quarter and blew the game open in the fourth quarter.
GINW led by as much as 21 points at 50-29 in the final frame before closing the final margin to 52-42.
Joanna Bryant led McCook with 12 points and Tara Powell added 11.
Brianna Watkins tallied 9, Hanah Swanhorst 5, Sydney Jumps 2, Meagan Carfield 2 and Emilyne Nichols 1.
Bryant grabbed 8 rebounds and Powell 5. Bryant had 6 steals.
GINW's Jenna Rouzee poured in 26 points. Emily Jones scored 9, Kelly Olsufka 8, Amelia Boehler 7 and Kyla Havranek 2.
"I was proud of them (the MHS girls)," said McCook girls basketball coach Barry Schaeffer. "They kept playing hard. I don't know how many shots I counted that when they left our girls' hands it was going in and didn't.
"Their girls did what they had to to win. We couldn't get anything going in the third quarter. I can't fault our shots. The girls were hustling. We saw great things from Meagan Carfield and Gretchen Sehnert (both sophomores). They'll get better as we go."
McCook is 1-1 and will play Norton in the first round of the 20th annual Goodland Topside Tip-off Classic Thursday.
Tip-off is 5 p.m. central time/4 p.m. mountain time.
"It's a fun tournament and the girls like going," Schaeffer said. "Our goal is to get to the championship game."
Some of the McCook players are scheduled to take the ACTs Saturday morning which could complicate putting a lineup on the floor for a consolation game on Saturday, but Schaeffer has a solution.
"The key is to get the win in the first game and we won't have to worry about the ACTs," Schaeffer suggested.
The McCook boys, also 1-1, will play Weskan in the first round Thursday. Tip-off is 7 p.m. central time/6 p.m. mountain time.
