STRATTON -- Verna Annabell Burks died Monday. Aug. 11, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb., at the age of 90.

She was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Hamlet, Neb., the daughter of the late Clarence and Ottie Bell (Perkins) Graham. She grew up at Hamlet where she graduated from Hamlet High School in 1937. She began working as a practical nurse at the hospital in Stratton, Neb.

On Sept. 21, 1942, Verna married Paul Grant Burks at Seattle, Wash., and they resided in Seattle for two years before returning to Stratton, where they farmed south of Stratton until retiring and moving to Stratton in 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on Oct. 23, 1998, one brother, William Graham and one sister, Grace Claussen are also deceased.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Circle, Past Worthy Matron of Ola Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and a member of Hope Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary and the MGR Extension Club.

Verna is survived by five daughters, Patricia Ann Wright and husband, Vince of Kearney, Pamela Jean Potthoff and husband, Harold of Trenton, Neb., Aneta Marie Harding and husband, Don of Cambridge, Neb., LaDonna Rae Humphrey and husband, Ron of Lincoln, Neb., Christi Sue Burks of Hemingford, Neb.; one son, Clarence Burks of Stratton; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Myers of Imperial, Neb.; and relatives and friends.

Memorial funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday Aug. 14, 2008, at United Methodist Church in Stratton with the Rev. Brian Fong officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home in Trenton from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
