Schoenberger, Karnopp, Pollmann, Hamilton, Wheat Harvest win at Decatur County Speedway

Monday, July 14, 2008

OBERLIN -- While wheat harvest is often completed in Northwest Kansas by the end of the second weekend of July, it was still going strong on Sunday, the night Decatur County Speedway had a race scheduled.

Despite the decreased car and fan count, the show went on.

While the wheat combines had most of the attention in the area, Jason Schoenberger of Gorham, Kelly Karnopp of Norton, Max Pollmann of Trenton and Mitch Hamilton of McCook took the A Feature wins at the track.

The Modified division looked a little different that night, as the three Stock Cars that came to race were added to the field.

Stock car driver Josh Hudson of Kensington jumped out with the early lead, but could not stop Modified driver John Huffman of McCook from taking the high line and zooming out to the lead.

Heat winner Jason Schoenberger got by Hudson soon after and tracked down the Nebraska driver. On lap seven, Schoenberger found his way around and drove off with the win.

Beau Speicher of Denver started in the back of the field and got by Huffman with two laps to go for second place.

Milo Lippleman of Oberlin ran steady to bring his Modified home in fourth place, ahead of stock Car driver Cory Struckhoff of Kensington.

Even though Kelly Karnopp's family duties prevented him from changing gears in his Hobby Stock, it did not stop him from a good run. Jason McIntyre of Colby had a rough heat race, but enjoyed showing the way for the first half of the Hobby Stock A Feature.

By then, Karnopp found the high line worked for him, took the lead on lap six from "Shrek" and never looked back.

McIntyre was satisfied with second place considering the time he spent over the weekend repairing the car from a wreck Friday night at Culbertson.

Newcomer Bret Conness of WaKeeney beat 15-year-old Matthew Crowell for fourth place.

Norman Wiechman of Scott City brought his AMC Javelin to the track too late for the heat races, but lined up in time for the main event and took home fifth place.

Heat winner Billy Aeby of Imperial, Nebraska and Rick Touslee of Oberlin were the top two drivers early on in the Classic Modified A Feature.

Max Pollmann, who was three-for-three in A Feature wins at Decatur County Speedway this year, had to make a daring double-play pass on the duo to take the lead on lap four.

Touslee also got by Aeby, but for the fourth time this year, followed Pollmann to the line for second place.

Aeby took the third position, ahead of Alex Pollmann and Loren Pollmann, both of Trenton.

Mitch Hamilton gained his first Kansas Mini-Truck A Feature win.

After winning the heat race, Hamilton again moved out front of Oberlin's Dale Heyen and Lenora's Loyd Schoen on the opening lap.

While trying to stay with Hamilton, Heyen looped his truck with a few laps to go, handing second place to Schoen.

The next race at Decatur County Speedway will be during the Decatur County Fair Aug. 4.

The pit gates will open at 3 p.m. central time, the grandstands at 5 p.m. and the races will start at 7 p.m.

The BST IMCA Modifieds will return to do battle that night.

The IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Classic Modifieds and Mini-Trucks will all be on hand to do battle for one more time this season.
