McCook defense

holds Scottsbluff

to seven yards

of total offense,

one first down

The McCook defense limited Scottsbluff to seven yards of total offense and one first down and blew out the Bearcats 44-0 in Friday night football action at Weiland Field.

The Bison shut out Scottsbluff for the fifth time in the last six meetings between the schools.

The Bison also forced two turnovers -- an interception by senior Andrew Reitz and a fumble recovery by junior Chris Schleeman. Junior Tyrone Sellers blocked a punt. redeeming himself after being called for a roughing the kicker penalty.

Garrett Wagner put the final points on the board when he tackled a Bearcat runner in the end zone for a safety.

Junior Matt Berry scored three touchdowns for the Bison. He had TD runs of 1 and 8 yards in the first quarter and returned a punt 53 yards for another TD.

Berry had another punt return for a TD called back because of a penalty and another return to the 5-yard line was also nullified.

Sellers scored McCook's first TD on a 4-yard run early in the first quarter.

In the third quarter, Zach Wieser added a 4-yard TD run and senior backup quarterback Justin Spector scored on a 1-yard TD run.

Junior Jeff Lorentz was successful on all six of his extra point attempts.

Mccook rushed for 246 yards on 46 carries and 12 players carried the football.

Senior Sam Frazier had 83 yards on 11 carries. Wieser had 57 yards on 10 carries.

Andy Smith added 27 yards on four carries, Brock Kotschwar had 20 yards rushing on four carries.

Berry rushed for 18 yards and completed 6-of-11 passes for 49 yards. Brady Hess caught two passes for 21 yards.

Scottsbluff's Daron Pattinson was limited to 14 yards rushing on 15 carries.

The biggest negative for the Bison was penalties.

McCook was flagged 12 times for 95 yards. Scottsbluff was whistled five times for 40 yards.

McCook Bison head football coach Jeff Gross said the squad's hard work paid off in the 44-point outcome and the shutout.

"I can't single a kid out on offense or defense -- they all played well," Gross said. "We sure like Tyrone Sellers and J.D. Stone at defensive end. Our schemes and theories worked."

One major area of concern for the Bison is the injury status of junior Dillon Goltl, who starts at wide receiver, nickel back and punter.

He was injured on the opening kickoff.

The severity of Goltl's injury is unknown at press time.

McCook plays on the road next Friday at Ogallala. Kick off is at 7 p.m.
