Repeat winners in victory lane at McCook Speedway

Monday, July 9, 2007
Billie Cole/McCook Daily Gazette John Huffman (3) and Ritchie Wickizer (25W) hit the straightaway in the IMCA stock car division race at McCook Speedway Friday night. Huffman won the heat race, while Wickizer took sixth in the A feature. Races return to McCook on Friday, with fan appreciation night. Races start at 8 p.m.

It was Mel Welp and Mark Hinz Memorial night at McCook Speedway Friday night.

Something done on this night that was done in the past memorial nights was cash handed out to the heat race winners.

The past was present at McCook Speedway, as the drivers who won the A Features had done so at least once before this year.

Those drivers include Cindy and David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Zach Schultz of North Platte, Max Pollmann of Trenton and Justin Wagner of Culbertson.

David Murray wasted little time in getting to the front of the IMCA Modified A Feature. Murray started in row four, but had the lead by the completion of lap five.

There was considerable racing behind him, as the drivers found more than one groove to run. Heat winner Matt Fabrizius of WaKeeney, used the high line to get himself to second place, but on the last lap, drove too high in corner one and his car went off the race track.

Robby Haines of Benkelman benefited and took the second place finish. Brandon Hagan of Culbertson finished in third, in front of heat winner Nick Tubbs of Colby and Jeremy Frenier of Fort Collins, Colo.

Ritchie Wickizer went to the lead at the start of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, then lost it when his car looped on the second lap.

Zach Schultz inherited the lead and never looked back, taking his third straight A Feature win at McCook.

Fellow heat winner Lloyd Meeske of Champion held off a hard-charging Todd Chrisman of North Platte for second spot. Larry Pollmann of McCook won the battle for fourth place over Shane Stout of North Platte, as the two raced side-by-side for much of the race.

Tire management was important for the IMCA Hobby Stock drivers. Half of the field spent time in the pits changing tires.

Richard Boon of Benkelman, who led most of the race, had tire concerns of his own, hoping he taking a tire off of the bead as he slid through the corners.

He did not get a flat, but he did get a challenge from Justin Wagner near the end of the race and with one lap to go, Wagner went by Boon on the high side en route to take the victory.

Shane Klockman of Ogallala finished in third place. Benkelman drivers Austin Davis and Michael Brunswig rounded out the top five. Sixth place Corey Cruzan of Maxwell was the Hobby Stock Heat race winner.

After the Classic Modifieds had issues on the opening lap, the drivers got down to business.

Rick Touslee of Oberlin won the heat race and was showing the fast way around the track for quite a bit of the A Feature. Max Pollmann took the lead from Touselee on lap five.

The two then made contact in corner one, bringing out the caution. Touslee went to the pits with a flat tire and as credited with the caution.

Pollmann was given the lead spot again and despite a bent axle, was able to keep Devin Allen of Culbertson directly in his rear view window.

Matt Matson of McCook finished in third place, while Trent Jollensten of McCook finished in fourth place. Loren Pollmann of Trenton rounded out the top five.

The Mini Truck A Feature had quite a bit of passing. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin had the lead at the start of the race and hoped that would be all of the passing out front.

It was for a while, as Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Alex Silos of North Platte and Cindy Murray jockeyed for second.

Murray finally found the high line to her liking. Like her dad, she took the lead on lap five and never looked back. Her cousin Jake Olmstead of Overton, the cash dash winner, got by Dolan late in the race to finish in second place.

Silos and Dale Heyen of Oberlin went door-to-door out of corner four and Silos snuck out with fourth.

The next race at McCook Speedway will be next Friday. That night is fan appreciation night and many giveaways are planned for the fans.

The gates open at 6 p.m. and the races start at 8 p.m., central time.
