MCC golfers wrap up season with 10th-place finish at district

GOTHENBURG -- The McCook Community College men's golf team finished the 2006-07 season with a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA Division I District III Championship.

The 54-hole tournament took place Monday and Tuesday on the par-72 Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg.

The Indians posted a 1014 score, opening with a 334 total on the first 18 holes and following up with rounds of 350 and 330.

Brian Lawson was the top MCC individual golfer with a 242 score, good for a 26th-place tie. Lawson shot rounds of 78-83-81.

Sean Sterkel tied for 48th with a 248 (83-85-80), followed by McCook High School alum Brett Chmiel, tied for 50th, 249 (82-84-83); Joseph Deibler, tied for 67th, 275 (91-98-86); and Alex Hufman, 72nd place, 322 (107-100-115).

Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College won the district title with an 891 score (303-293-295). The Blue Dragons edged Indian Hills (Iowa) CC by two strokes for the championship.

Johnson County (Kan.) placed third at 914, followed by Dodge City (Kan.) 925, Coffeyville (Kan.) and Pratt (Kan.) 949, Kansas City (Kan.) 950, Iowa Western 957, Otero Junior College (LaJunta, Colo.) 992, McCook CC 1014, Lamar (Colo.) 1015, Colby CC 1028 and Eastern Wyoming 1063.

Hutchinson's Alex Wasinger captured first-place individual honors with a 2-over-par 218 score (75-72-71). Indians Hills' Wade Pettitt was second with a 221 (72-76-73), followed by Hutchinson's Grady Pauls (the Kansas Jayhawk Conference champion) at 222 (77-71-74).
