to capture first state championship

SCOTTSBLUFF -- McCook's Brandon Crick claimed his first state title Thursday winning the Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship at Scotts Bluff Country Club.

Crick's 54-hole score of eight-under par 208 was a tournament record and eight shots better than runner-up Bobby Knowles of Omaha.

Crick carded an impressive 67 after the first 18 holes, and then he caused some looks of disbelief Wednesday when he shot an amazing 63, which tied a Scotts Bluff Country Club tournament round record.

By the time Thursday's action rolled around, Crick already enjoyed a 15-stroke lead.

"I played as well as I could have that day," Crick was quoted in the Scottsbluff Star Herald. "It seemed like I could make everything. I was knocking everything close."

Crick fired a 78 Thursday. He still ended up winning by eight strokes over Bobby Knowles of Omaha, and his three-round total of 8-under-par 208 was a tournament record.

Josh Reinertson of Gibbon and Phil Hranac of Kearney both finished with a 220.

"I didn't play like I wanted to, but a win is a win," Crick told the Herald. It was hard," he said. "I was kind of in between playing conservatively and trying to make the same swings I made. But I played more on the conservative side, and it got me into trouble sometimes.

"It was kind of a frustrating day. I had a few bad breaks. Things that went my way yesterday or the day before didn't go my way today. But that's how it is in golf sometimes. I knew I could do it.

"It was just a matter of whether I could play three solid rounds. Fortunately, I only had to play two solid rounds."

The 2006 Nebraska Junior Amateur was Crick's final junior championship, the McCook High School graduate will play at the University of Gonzaga beginning this fall.

It was also announced that Crick is one of eight Nebraska junior golfers selected to represent Nebraska in the Kansas-Nebraska Cup next week in Wichita, Kan.
