ATWOOD -- Edna Mildred Schaffert, 83,of Atwood, originally of Bartley, died Monday (May 15, 2006), at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood.

She was born on July 9, 1922, in Red Willow County, near Bartley, to John Frederick and Annie Augusta (Weiss) Fritz. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942.

On May 31, 1943, she married Melvin Dale Schaffert at the Bartley Trinity Lutheran Church. The family made their home on a farm south of Bartley. Together they farmed until Melvin's death on February 2, 1998. Edna moved to Atwood in January of 1999 to be near her daughter.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Bartley American Legion Auxiliary, Bartley VFW Auxiliary and Trenton VFW Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Annie Fritz; her husband, Melvin Schaffert; one brother, Walter Fritz; three half-brothers, John, Max and Carl Fritz; one half-sister, Freda (Fritz) Barth; and two grandchildren, Melvin and Marlene Memmelaar.

Survivors include her two children, Paul Schaffert and wife, Pat, of Indianola and Karen and husband, Lucas Memmelaar, of Atwood; one brother-in-law, Ervin Schaffert and wife, Lillian, of Indianola; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren,

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Directory Fund.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral in McCook.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, at Peace Lutheran Church with The Revs. Randy Wahl and Don White officiating. The burial will be held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery south of Bartley at 10:00 a.m.
