McCook Bison girls tennis team improves duel record to 5-2

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

LEXINGTON -- The McCook High School varsity girls tennis team improved its season duel record to 5-2 by defeating Lexington 5 matches to 4 Tuesday at Lexington.

The Bison play Thursday at the Kearney Catholic Invite and Saturday at the Greater Nebraska Activities Council tournament at Scottsbluff.

Both tournaments start at 9 a.m. local time.

"I expected a close final score as we have been placing equally in the invitationals all season," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers.

"We got off to a good start winning two of the three doubles matches, but struggled in singles play. The matches they lost were because they made too many unforced errors and beat themselves.

"It was great to come away with the duel win, but I would rather the team play good tennis. They played tired and showed poor fundamental ground strokes.

"They also didn't play smart tennis, as they were out of position quite a bit and didn't take advantage of their opponent when they were out of position.

"With only three weeks left in the season, they need to be at the peak of their game.

"We will need to regroup Wednesday and prepare for a tough finish to the week."

Wiemers said he was pleased with the play of the Bison junior varsity,

"Our junior varsity continued to play well and have success on the court," Wiemers said.

"I have been pleased with their development this season. I am optimistic about our future, as we have some quality players who have gotten quite a bit of experience.

"Courtney Clapp suffered a severe ankle sprain and had to default her matches. We hope to get her back as we will have some chances to get a lot of girls some court experience."
