SCOTTSBLUFF -- The McCook High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Scottsbluff for the GNAC wrestling tournament Saturday.

Chris Schleeman came away with the only conference title for the Bison as he finished 3-0 at 171 pounds.

"Chris is a true competitor," said McCook wrestling Nick Umscheid.

"Everything from his work ethic in the practice room to his mental attitude is phenomenal. You rarely see a high school athlete today who has his physical and mental toughness.

"The coaches were talking after the tournament and we couldn't remember the last time a freshman won the conference tournament from McCook.

"For Chris to accomplish something like that speaks volumes about his athletic ability. I believe that we have only seen a little bit of what he is capable of doing."

McCook sophomore Sam Frazier placed second at the tournament in the 189-pound weight class. This was Sam's first time placing at the conference tournament.

Bison senior Skyler Monzon placed third at 125 pounds.

"I believe that the team overall didn't wrestle up to their capabilities," Umscheid said. "Some of our wrestlers took a step back from where they were a week or two ago. We were hoping to place five on the medal stand Saturday and finish as a team around fifth place but that didn't happen.

"The team needs to get refocused and have a good week of intense practices if they plan on finishing the season on a high note. There is only one tournament guaranteed to each of these guys, after that it's in their hands on where they go from there.

"The good thing about Saturday's performance is that the mistakes made out on the mat were mistakes that can be fixed in one week.

"Many of our wrestlers were taking unnecessary risks or putting themselves in bad positions. If we can correct those mistakes we have a chance next Saturday at the district tournament in Gothenburg."
