The chimes of time

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

A massive eight-foot-tall oak cabinet awaits the installation of chimes so that amplified Westminster quarter-hour chimes will once again ring out over the campus of McCook Community College. Originally installed in a closet in the basement of McMillen Hall in 1939 and used irregularly since that time, the Deagan chime system has been completely restored and will now be a showpiece on the first floor, its chimes, strikers, timing devices and paper rolls of music positioned in a trio of dark-red-stained cabinets. The project has been funded by the McCook College Foundation. Campus President Dr. Richard Tubbs plans a reception to rededicate the chimes on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
