Chamber recognizes contributions to community
McCook Economic Development Director Rex Nelson was recognized as Chamber Volunteer of the Year and Sheri Sughroue was McCook Area Community Volunteer of the Year at an upbeat McCook Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet Saturday night.
Gov. Dave Heineman used the opportunity to outline his plans for the state, as well as press the flesh as he was put to work handing out the numerous awards.
Johnny Walker served as auctioneer for the live auction, which combined with the silent auction, raised about $9,500 for chamber activities. Cal Siegfried kept things moving along with his down-home humor as master of ceremonies.
MEDC Director for two years, relative newcomer Rex Nelson won the Chamber Volunteer of the Year award for his dedication to community activities.
Sheri Sughroue was presented roses by her three children following a long list of her qualifications for the McCook Area Volunteer of the Year Award. They include being a volunteer EMT and firefighter, 4-H leader, T-ball and baseball coach, chairwoman of the Red Willow County Extension Board and numerous other activities, including being chairwoman of Bartley's two day annual summer celebration and contributing to the annual "Live Nativity."
Mayor Dennis Berry's Community Builder Award was presented for his involvement with the chamber as well as serving on the MEDC, Hillcrest Foundation Board, United Way, Southwest Nebraska Child Advocacy Team, Work Ethic Camp Community Advisory Group, Red Willow County Emergency Management Team and numerous other activities.
Pete Graff was recognized with the Ag Builder Award for promoting agriculture through his expertise in the banking industry.
A Naval Aviator in World War II, he has numerous accomplishments and awards over the years, including serving on the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority and as Interim Director of the Nebraska Department of Banking and Financing. He and his wife, Delores, have 11 children and 31 grandchildren, and remain active in supporting St. Patrick's Church and School, Community Hospital, McCook Community College and Rotary as well as the Chamber of Commerce.
Facility Administrator Raleigh Haas accepted the Community Service Award on behalf of the Work Ethic Camp.
The facility recognized for its contributions to McCook and the surrounding area, including 172,727 man-hours of work in a 60 to 75 mile radius from McCook, assisting more than 80 entities with conscientious and quality work.
Indianola Fire Chief Tom Davidson was recognized as McCook Area Public Servant of the Year award.
A member of the Indianola Fire and Rescue Department since 1994, Davidson was first truck and equipment maintenance officer before becoming fire chief. "Our award winner volunteered countless hours toward meetings, welding bunker racks, painting, etc., and was very instrumental in the completion of the new fire station," according to the nomination.
Sara Rippen was recognized as Cordial of the Year for her contribution of time and talent to the group that helps welcome new businesses to the Chamber of Commerce and local business community.
Incoming Chamber President Richard Stull, owner of McDonald's restaurants in McCook and Norton, expressed optimism about the coming year, and recognized the hard work of outgoing president Bob Bong as well as executive director Pam Harsh, assistant director Dot Kilgore and administrative assistant Kim Sis.
Approximately 180 people enjoyed a prime rib dinner catered by the Chief Motel Country Kitchen, as well as music by Chris Lyons and Harold Larmon.
