Bison girls clipped by Cozad

COZAD -- McCook's girls fought back in the second half of Thursday's game at Cozad, but came up short 40-38.

"The girls made an outstanding effort in the second to come back and get in position to win the game," said Bison Coach Barry Schaeffer.

"We had chances throughout the game to win it at the free throw line and could not capitalize. On a positive note, in the past three games we have done a better job in the turnover area."

Allison Smith led the Bison in scoring with 13 points. Jillian Bryant followed with 12 points.

Lindsey McNutt finished the game with 6 points. Kayla Wilson was the leading rebounder with 13.

Wilson had 6 assists and 3 steals.

The Bison girls had 29 rebounds, 8, turnovers and 6 steals.

Allison Hendrickson led the Haymakers with 13 points. Mallory Nutt totaled 12 points. Amanda Francescato had 8 points and Venny Alub had 6.

McCook hosts Hastings Friday night.

"We need to put all of the elements we have played with this season together and play complete games, we have been close many times we just haven't done it yet," said Schaeffer.

"We need to bounce back right away and take care of Hastings tonight."

COZAD -- McCook's JV girls overpowered Cozad 49-15 Thursday. "Overall the girls played a good game," said Bison JV coach Robin Henrichs.

"They did a good job playing our game and not the opponents' game. We had very balanced scoring and everyone who played scored in the game."

Melissa Lyster led the Bison in scoring with 9 points. Lyster was also the leading rebounder with 7 and had 4 steals.

Kelsee Meissner and Michelle McKenna each had 8 points.

Meissner had 5 rebounds and 2 assists and McKenna had 3.

Jessica Einspahr scored 7 points and Cody Korus had 5. Austin Wilson had 3 steals and Ashley Carfield had 4 rebounnds and 3 assists.

Bison frosh A teams

improve to 5-0

OGALLALA -- McCook's freshman girls and boys are both 5-0 after defeating Ogallala Thursday.

The Bison girls won 50-38 and the boys 65-38.

"The kids played very hard on both ends of the floor and I was pleased in how our defense continues to create offensive opportunities for us, " said Bison boys Coach Bill Beckenhauer.

Zach Wieser and Ryan Hardin led the Bison boys with 16 points each. Matt Berry posted 12 points. Seth Schaeffer had 9 points and Jeff Lorentz had 8.

The freshman boys B team played two quarters with Ogallala falling short 14-11. Taylor Garcia led the B game with 4 points.

Jake Curl, Joe Vetrovsky and Austin Larson had two points each.

"The game started rough for us, and we got into some foul trouble," said coach Jon Graff.

"We came out in the second half and played smarter, limiting our fouls and forcing their mistakes.The girls responded well and made the adjustments to win."

Joanna Bryant led the Bison girls with 13 points.

Kali Lyons followed with 10 points and Brianna Watkins had 9. Sydney Jumps and Lyons were the leading rebounders both with 6.
