ARAPAHOE -- Herbert Rudolf Wendland, 97, died Monday (Dec. 26, 2005) at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kan.

He was born Feb. 19, 1908, to Herman W. and Emma E. (Sydow) Wendland in Gosper County. He attended Immanuel Parochial School.

He served in the U.S. Army with British Services and the First Armored Division from 1941 until 1945.

He married Genevieve A. Hermes on Sept. 23, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Arapahoe.

He worked with Soil Conservation Services in Iowa, NSW Construction and operated Wendland Construction.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and Burtons Bend VFW Post No. 9357 of Arapahoe. He also served on the Veterans Service Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert; sisters, Adele, Agatha, Annie and Lenora; stepson, Lyle Schievelbein; son-in-law, Tom Minturn; and grandson, Ronald Schievelbein.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Wendland of Arapahoe; two daughters, Mary Ann Wendland of Omaha and Jane Wendland and husband, Mark Rindone of Omaha; sister, Elda Roethemeyer of Gothenburg; daughter-in-law, Ramona Schievelbein of Elwood; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Arapahoe with the Rev. David Otten officiating. Interment will be in the Arapahoe Cemetery. Military rites will be given by Burtons Bend VFW Post No. 9357.

Visitation will be today, until 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and Thursday, prior to services, at the church.
