Bison boys 4th, girls 6th at Goodland

GOODLAND, Kan. -- The McCook High School boys and girls basketball teams brought home fourth- and sixth-place finishes from the Goodland, Kan., Topside Tipoff Classic.

The Bison boys lost to Burlington, Colo., 87-79 in the third-place game.

The McCook girls lost to Ottawa, Kan., 58-33 in the fifth-place game.

The Bison squads each placed one player on the All-Tournament Teams -- Garrett Rippen for the boys and Jillian Bryant for the girls.

Both McCook teams are 2-3.

The McCook boys and girls will host Holdrege next Saturday. The varsity girls game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys game at 7:30 p.m.

The McCook boys placed four players in double figures against Burlington.

Joel Arterburn scored 17 points, Rippen 15, Cory Gaston 12 and Joel Putz 11.

Tony Purvis and Bradon Crick each scored 8 points. Brett Burton and John Swanhorst each scored 4.

Putz fired in three 3-pointers and Gaston two.

Crick grabbed 6 rebounds. Gaston, Rippen and Arterburn each had 5. Putz and Arterburn each had 4 steals.

Burlington's Nat David fired in 30 points, including four 3-pointers.

Cole Smith scored 17 points, Brian Collins 12 and Loren Queen 12. Smith grabbed 15 rebounds as Burlington outboarded McCook 45-31.

The McCook girls team was short-handed at the start of the contest because six players were taking the ACT.

Bryant led the Bison girls with 10 points.

Allison Smith added 6 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.

Lindsay Hazlitt added 5 rebounds.

Megan Ramsey paced Ottawa with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Stephanie Mars added 12 points.
