Dana varsity
defeats Midland
FREMONT (Dana College Sports Info) -- The Dana College varsity volleyball team defeated rival Midland Lutheran 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-18) Wednesday night in Fremont.
Reputation was on the line in this game -- not just because of the Dana vs. Midland rivalry, but also because Dana was nudged out of the post-season GPAC tournament by Midland who appeared in the regional rankings this week.
The Vikings were out to prove themselves head-to-head.
The Viking offense crushed the Warriors. Katie Japp (Omaha) hit .450 with 9 kills and no errors. Janice Fonoti (Kalihi, Hawaii) hit .500 with 8 kills and one error.
Darcy Gross (Earling, Iowa) hit 11 kills and put up 3 solo blocks.
"We played well. It's sort of been our thing all year--if we pass well we can set up our offense and win. We certainly have the offensive talent," said coach Bruce Atkinson.
Good passing set up the Viking offense. Libero Krystal Jones (Merced, Calif.) even had a kill from the back row.
Dana served 15 aces in all. Setter Michelle Jankovits (Culbertson) had 7 ace serves.
Japp and Nichole Elwood (Fremont) each served three.
Jankovits also had 4 kills and 35 assists in the game.
This is Dana's second win over Midland this season. The Vikings ousted the Warriors 3-1 in Blair in mid-September.
The Vikings are now 16-18 overall. They will play a final regular season game at Grace University Friday night.
