Jason Loop crowned men's club champion at Heritage Hills
Golf tournaments many times have unique interesting endings and the Heritage Hills Club Championship July 9-10 was no exception.
Chris Nix, the 2003 champion, led with an opening round 74.
Nick Nothnagel was one stroke back at 75, followed by 2004 champion Tyler Lawson with a 78, John Nothnagel with a 79 and 1994 club champion and past McCook High School state medalist Jason Loop with 79.
With one hole to play Nick Nothnagel was one stroke ahead of Chris Nix.
When Nothnagel holed an 18-foot slider on the 18th hole, it appeared he won the championship by a stroke with a final round 76 over Nix.
However, playing in the group in front was Loop, who in 35 mile an hour gusty winds, carved out a one under par 71 for a final total of 150 to finish one ahead of Nothnagel and two ahead of Nix.
"This is a remarkable finishing round under any conditioins," Heritage Hills golf professional Lee Maiden said. "Jason is an accomplished player, however, is dedicated to family and work and does not play or practice much, he is truly a natural talent, 71 in this wind is 'all world.'
"Although the outcome may have been the same, Nix and Nothnagel (playing together) assumed the championship would be decided between them and on the 36th hole. Jason is a worthy champion of such a prestigious event."
