The art of drumming

Charles Ahovissi of Omaha demonstrates his drumming technique during his week-long artist-in-residency at East Ward in McCook. Ahovissi taught African dance to Paula Davis's third graders, who presented a recital for fellow students, teachers and parents Friday afternoon. Ahovissi hopes his residencies promote multiculturalism and unity and foster a better understanding of Africa's diverse cultures. His residency in McCook was sponsored by the McCook Arts Council and the Artists in Schools and Communities Program of the Nebraska Arts Council. Grants to fund artists-in-residence programs at McCook schools are written by special services/administrative assistant Ruth Ann Hackenkamp, who also schedules and coordinates the residencies.
