Cambridge, Southern Valley, Bertrand post first-round wins at RVL tourney

CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge Trojans lasted Alma 76-49 in the first round of the Republican Valley League Basketball Tournament Tuesday night.
Cambridge shot 73 percent from the field while hitting 63 percent from behind the arc in the first half.
This hot shooting jumped Cambridge out to a 44-23 halftime lead.
Unfortunately for Alma, Cambridge shot 69 percent, from the field.
Cambridge was led in scoring by Waid Vontz who scored 21 including hitting 4 of 7 from three point range. Anthony Lytle added 17 and did not miss a shot from the floor hitting 6 of 6 shots.
Jake Ring led Alma in scoring with 26, followed by Jacob Kindler with 10.
Cambridge moves on to play Southern Valley in the second round on Friday.
Southern Valley handed Dundy County a 59-38 loss in another first round game.
Southern Valley was helped by a quick start.
The Eagles came out and posted 24 first quarter points while holding Dundy County to 13.
The Eagles continued playing good defense in the second quarter by holding Dundy County to 3 points.
Mike Powell led Southern Valley in scoring with 18 followed by Brock Einspahr who chipped in 12.
Dundy County was led by Kyle Glidden with 11.
Southern Valley advanced to play Cambridge on Friday.
Bertrand defeated Southwest 41-40 in a first-round game at Indianola.
Bertrand turned up the defense in the second quarter limting Southwest to just 5 points in the quarter which gave them a 23-17 lead.
The third quarter was played to a tie, and in the fourth Southwest made a good comeback attempt but just fell short losing the game 41-40.
After the game Southwest coach Mat Jageler said, "We were without two key payers, which didn't give us much depth. We tried to limit Schwarz and make the team beat us instead of one player, and they did. It was a hard fought game by both teams."
Bertrand was led by Campbell with 10.
Mason Nelms led Southwest with 19 and was the lone Roughrider in double figures.
Bertrand advanced to play Arapahoe Friday.

WALLACE -- The Golden Plains Athletic Conference boys tournament kicked off with Hitchcock County playing Hayes Center.
Hayes Center led at halftime 17-4 en route to a 35-23 victory over the Falcons.
Brett Brown led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 followed by Joseph Frecks with 11.
Hitchcock County was led by John Thompson and Josh Kershaw who each had 9.
Hayes Center advance on to play No. 1 seed Wallace in the second round on Friday.
Hitchcock County will play Maywood in the consolation game on Friday.
The second game of the night pitted Wheatland against Maywood.
This game turned out to be a tight one but Wheatland was able to get the slight advantage winning the game 56-50.
Tony Ross led Wheatland in scoring with16, followed by Mark Johnson with 12 and Sean Hanson 11.
Maywood was led by Craig Hazen with 18. Marshall Fischer scored 15 points, and Derrick Hansen added 10.

ATWOOD -- Rawlins County hosted Cheylin Tuesday night and handed the Cougars a 61-30 loss.
The Buffaloes didn't allow Cheylin a double digit quarter and held them to a team shooting percentage of 26.
Rawlins County was led by Chelsie Kramer with 17 points. Emily Timm added 16 and Simone Cahoj 12.
Aubery Kehlbeck and Kaedra Dixson led Cheylin in scoring with 9.
Rawlins County hosts Quinter for its next contest. Cheylin travels to Wheatland for its next game.
