Heisman finalist

CAMBRIDGE -- Lisa Minnick of Cambridge was chosen from high schools throughout the state as on of 20 state finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

The finalists were honored at a banquet Saturday, Oct. 23 in Lincoln.

The Wendy's High School Heisman program began 11 years ago in a partnership between Wendy's International the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City to honor students based on accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and community service.

Wendy's founder, Dave Thomas, created this award to recognize today's top scholars, athletes, and citizens among America's high school students.

In athletics, Minnick has been a letter winner in every sport since her freshman year.

She has been named All-State honorable mention for two years in basketball, All-State honorable mention for one year in volleyball, RVL All-Conference Second Team in volleyball and basketball, and was selected to the Academic All-State Teams in volleyball and basketball.

Minnick holds the shot put record at Cambridge High School.

She is active and holds offices in National Honor Society, C-Club, FBLA, and the senior class.

This past summer she was selected to participate in the summer honors program in medical science at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is ranked second in her class.

Minnick has helped with the blood mobile, Relay For Life, and Adopt-a-Highway.

She has been a teacher's aide, bible school teacher, and has helped coach and referee youth volleyball and basketball league teams.

Minnick is active in a local youth group. She plans to attend college at either the University of Nebraska -- Lincoln or Nebraska Wesleyan, majoring in pharmacy.

Her parents are Bill and Nancy Minnick of Cambridge.

girls hoops

meeting Nov. 9

There will be a girls basketball meeting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9 in the McCook High School commons area.

This meeting is for all girls in grades 9-12 who are interested in participating in girls basketball this season at McCook High School.

The meeting will cover rules and expectations for participants. A calendar for practices and a game schedule will also be handed out.

Parents are also encouraged to attend this meeting.
